In the Spotlight!

Ianiro The Capital Area Dental Foundation is blessed to have more than 90 dentists participating in one or more of its dental programs.  Each month, these dedicated dentists take time away from their private practice to treat patients who may otherwise go without the dental care they need to lead healthy, productive and joyful lives.

Over the next year, CADF plans to spotlight some of these amazing dentists. This quarter CADF is spotlighting a dentist who is new to the foundation but has already made a strong impression: Dr. Staci Ianiro, an endodontist with Ianiro Endodontics.

Dr. Ianiro signed up as a Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) provider in June.  Within a few weeks of becoming a HAAM provider, she decided to provide root canals to two HAAM patients at no cost so that they could use their $600 HAAM annual dental allowance for the crowns that they would require after their treatment.

For many years, I have donated financially to CADF, but at the 2014 Gala, I decided to also become a dental service provider. The reason is a very personal one. I was a foster child from the age of eight until I was almost twelve. I understand what it means to depend on people’s kindness for basic medical and dental needs.  I remember when I was nine, I needed glasses. There were only two frame styles that I could choose from, both very plain and “boyish.” The eye doctor saw how much I wanted these girly pink frames that were not “covered.” When I went to get my new glasses fitted, the lens were in those amazing pink frames. I was never told, but I knew the eye doctor made sure I got those glasses.  Now I can give back in my own way!

One of the HAAM patients who benefited from Dr. Ianiro’s generosity is a musician named “Steven.”  Dr. Ianiro provided a root canal to Steven at no charge so that he could use the rest of his HAAM benefit for other dental needs.

Dental health is such an important part of life. Knowing you’re being helped on the cost makes it easier to choose the right treatment when needed and not put it off.  I will never forget Dr. Ianiro’s generosity.  I’m so glad HAAM and CADF exist. My life would be completely different without the availability of healthcare and encouragement to continue making and sharing music.”  “Steven,”  HAAM patient

Dr. Ianiro was named a “Top Texas Dentist” in the Texas Monthly for three years in a row (2010-2014) and is active with the Texas Dental Association, the Capital Area Dental Society, the St. David’s Foundation and now, the Capital Area Dental Foundation.  She encourages other dentists to find a way to get involved in charitable dentistry:

The need for dental care is extensive in our community and we all have the power to help.  The more dentists that become providers, the more people we can treat. You never know, you could provide care for someone who in the future becomes inspired to give back in their own way, like a nine-year-old foster child who NEEDED a pair of glasses, but WANTED something special.”

If you would like to nominate a dentist who you believe has gone above and beyond, please email Amy Spiro, CADF’s communications director at aspiro@austin.rr.com.

Guess Who’s on Board?

The Capital Area Dental Foundation welcomed three fantastic new board members last week.

Annalisa Heck, DDS, is an emerging young leader in charitable dentistry. She is an active volunteer and a Founding Member of CADF’s Annual Giving Campaign, the Sustainer’s Circle.

Shane Matt, DDS, with Authentic Smiles is a major player in charitable dentistry.  He is a member of the Access to Care Committee and has been a long-time supporter of our partner, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

Kate Resnevic grew up around dentistry (both her father and sister are dentists!) and recently moved to Austin. She is a health care attorney and partner at Richards Rodriguez & Skeith LLP, a prominent Austin law firm.

Congratulations to all three new board members and thank you for your service to our community!

This Just In!

The Capital Area Dental Foundation was just named one of three FINALISTS for the Greenlights for Nonprofit Success Nonprofit Excellence Award.

This tremendous honor would never be possible without YOU–our supporters, volunteers and donors, including our amazing Sustainer’s Circle.

The winner will be announced in November at Greenlight’s Party for Good event.

Who’s the New Captain of the Ship?

Longtime supporter and community volunteer, Dr. Alan Moore, will serve as the new Chairman of the Capital Area Dental Foundation.  He replaces Dr. Kavin Kelp, who successfully guided the foundation through two years of tremendous growth and the hiring of a full staff, including the organization’s first executive director, Megan Woodburn, CAE.

Dr. Moore is involved in charitable dental care at both the national and local level and has served as president of the Capital Area Dental Society.  A general dentist with a popular practice in Central Austin, Dr. Moore has been involved with CADF since it was first established in 2008.   “Dentistry is a profession that has the opportunity to give back to the community.  My goal over the next year is to get more dentists involved in charitable dentistry.”

Outgoing chairman, Dr. Kavin Kelp will continue to serve on the board and will chair two key committees.  “It has been a great honor and true joy to serve as chairman of the Capital Area Dental Foundation. I want to thank all of the volunteer providers and donors who have enthusiastically embraced our mission.  Without these dedicated and generous individuals, CADF could not have provided over $250,000 worth of dental care last year alone.”

Thank You Volunteer Dentists!

Volunteer Dentists are the heart and soul of the Capital Area Dental Foundation. Without our volunteer dentists, hundreds of Central Texans would go without the dental care they need to live healthy, productive and happy lives.

Whether you have a few hours a year or a few hours a month, CADF can connect you to a volunteer opportunity that will change your life.  Contact CADF Program Director, Kristen Whaley at k.whaley@capitalareadentalfoundation.org to learn more.

Your Giving=Changed Lives

During the first weekend of August, the Capital Area Dental Foundation partnered with the TDA Smiles Foundation and the Capital Area Dental Society to participate in the Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) in Georgetown.  Led by TMOM dental chair, Dr. Kent Macaulay, CADF helped recruit more than 100 volunteer dentists who provided more than $550,000 in charitable care to 860 deserving patients.

CADF’s participation in the TMOM event was made possible in part by our new annual giving program, the Sustainer’s Circle.  So far, 20 amazing individualshave signed up to make an annual pledge to support CADF’s charitable activities.  Among these generous and passionate donors, 17 have signed up as Founding Members who have made at least a $1,000 commitment to CADF!

Volunteers Needed for Two-Day Blitz of Charitable Dental Care

The Capital Area Dental Foundation (CADF) in partnership with the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation and the Capital Area Dental Society is seeking volunteer dentists and dental assistants for the Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) event scheduled for August 1 and 2 at the East View High School in Georgetown (Williamson County).

Currently, we do not have enough dentists and dental assistants to care for the 1,000 patients we expect to seek care during this amazing
two-day event.

Shifts are available for both Friday and Saturday to treat adults with emergent dental needs who do not have access to care.  Treatment may include fillings, extractions, cleanings, exams, x-rays, limited root canals and limited prosthetics.

Please click here to register NOW for the August 1 and 2 TMOM event.
