Barry Rouch, DDS, MS, of Arboretum and Westlake Orthodontics, is a long-time Season for Caring volunteer. In 2013, he volunteered to provide free orthodontic care to a young man named Augustin who had major dental needs. Augustin lives in a trailer park with his family in an impoverished rural area. His mother, who was being treated for a serious illness, received dental care from another active CADF provider, Stanley LaCroix, DDS.
Our very own, Dr. Alan Moore, spoke this morning to Time Warner News about tomorrow’s CADS/CADF Golf Classic and how CADF helps people in the Austin area access charitable dental care through our many different programs.
Today in San Antonio, CADF founder and former chairman, C. Leonard Dolce, DDS, MS was named the 2015 Oral Health Champion by the Texas Oral Health Coalition at the Texas Oral Health Summit. The award recognizes individuals and organizations for extraordinary efforts to promote oral health.
“Dr. Dolce is an extraordinary leader and visionary,” said Dr. Alan Moore, chairman of the Capital Area Dental Foundation. “We are so proud that he has been recognized for his many years of dedicated focus to helping address a problem in access to dental care in the Austin area. What Dr. Dolce started as a volunteer-run effort with a single program is now an award-winning foundation with six programs, an endowment and a staff.”
Dr. Dolce, a retired periodontist, served as CADF’s chairman for more than four years. In addition to his work with CADF, Dr. Dolce helped create the dental hygienist program at Austin Community College. He also served as the President of the Capital Area Dental Society and Vice President of the Texas Dental Association.
“I am honored to receive this statewide award, It is gratifying to see that the charitable work of the Capital Area Dental Foundation is being recognized, not only for making a difference in Austin, but as a model for other cities to follow”
– C. Leonard Dolce, DDS, MS
“The rewarding part of dentistry is when people appreciate the work you do.” Dr. Adrian Bernal, East Austin Dental.
Originally from San Antonio, Dr. Adrian Bernal and his team at East Austin Dental are staying busy in their new bustling downtown practice. But not too busy to give back to the community that they now call home.
An avid music lover (who has played many instruments himself including piano, guitar and drums), Dr. Bernal is a dedicated HAAM dental provider who has treated upwards of 25 HAAM members in the past few years. He recently donated more than $4,000 in charitable care to three HAAM patients with the St. David’s Foundation/HAAM program paying for the rest. “These patients needed a lot of complex work and it was great to be able to complete their care.”
“I really appreciate the heartfelt things that musicians are doing for Austin. They are beautifying the city through music. We want to help out however we can. One way we do that is by being a CADF provider for the HAAM program.”
Dr. Bernal graduated from dental school in 2012 and became active in the Capital Area Dental Society New Dentists Committee where he learned about the Capital Area Dental Foundation. “Many thanks to CADF and HAAM for all they do for our musicians. Austin would not be as cool without them,” he said.
The Capital Area Dental Foundation has nominated its founder, Dr. Leonard Dolce for the Texas Oral Health Coalition Oral Health Champion Award. Dr. Dolce, who was recently named Alumni of the Year by the University of Texas School of Dentistry, founded the Capital Area Dental Foundation in 2007 and served as its chairman for many years. He has been instrumental in guiding the work of the Foundation and continues to serve as an advisor to the board. He has also been a generous supporter of the Foundation. Congratulations, Dr. Dolce!

Shine your boots and polish your bling – we are saddling up for a good time!
As the Capital Area Dental Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year, the 2016 CADF Round Up and Gala will be a time to celebrate successes, appreciate volunteers, and share the heartwarming stories of CADF’s patients. Plan on good food, drinks, music and camaraderie to support CADF’s mission and, most importantly, its patients.
See y’all there!

“As a volunteer you really affect change in people’s lives.
That’s about as good as it gets.”
Steven L. Yarbrough, DDS, FAGD
CADF Volunteer
A graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio dental school, Steven L. Yarbrough, DDS, FAGD has been in private practice at Westgate Family Dental since 1979. Throughout his dental career, he has always made it a point to give back to the community and offer his time and skills to people in need—from veterans to political refugees. Dr. Yarbrough has been recognized as an outstanding dentist by both Austin Monthly and Texas Monthly magazines.
Dr. Yarbrough signed up as a HAAM provider in the early days of the program and is glad he did. “I have really enjoy working with my HAAM patients,” he said. “Most of my HAAM patients are young and trying to make their mark in the music world. Often their dental care ended with their parents.”
Dr. Yarbrough has cared for nearly 40 HAAM patients since 2013. He recalls recently treating a patient who had unsightly decay on one of his front teeth. “The work we did was transformative. It just completely changed his smile. Our HAAM patients really do appreciate what we do for them so much. That’s the best pay you can get.”
Dr. Yarbrough encourages young dentists who have time on their schedule to consider volunteering with a program like HAAM or one of CADF’s other charitable care programs. “Volunteering is a great way to hone your clinical skills while doing something good for someone else.”
Don’t forget: HAAM Benefit Day is Tuesday, September 1, 2015.
The Capital Area Dental Foundation is deeply grateful to the following dentists who volunteered their time to care for CADF patients between April and June 2015. Thank you for giving back to the community and using your talent and skills to transform lives and restore dignity.
